Biography :

Professor Kevin Kolben is an assistant professor at Rutgers Business School in the department of Supply Chain Management and Marketing Sciences. A lawyer specializing in international labor regulation, and particularly its nexus with international economic law, he has worked extensively in South and Southeast Asia on labor rights and labor law issues, and he consults to various labor and human rights organizations.

Title and summary of the communication :

“Incorporating Private Regulatory Strategies into Trade and Labor Regimes”

In this presentation I will suggest that contemporary approaches to trade and labor linkage have been overly focused on state-centric models, particularly in relation to states with poor regulatory and enforcement capacity. Instead, a more effective way forward might be to create linkage regimes that utilize newly emergent systems of private labor regulation, and that are designed to help develop public regulatory capacity.
